Rainforest Alliance and Nespresso

We’re working hand-in-hand with the Rainforest Alliance, empowering farmers to grow sustainable quality coffee.

More than 20 years ago, Nespresso joined forces with the Rainforest Alliance to design the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program. Through AAA, we work directly with farmers to help them improve the quality and productivity of their farms using sustainable agricultural practices.

Many of the farms in the AAA Program are Rainforest Alliance Certified. For farmers who are not already Rainforest Alliance Certified, the AAA Program can support them as they work towards certification.

Today, more than 40% of the coffee that Nespresso sources globally for use in Nespresso capsules comes from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms, and we will increase this in the coming years.

What’s more, the Rainforest Alliance has benchmarked Nespresso’s AAA program and regularly assesses it to ensure it continues to meet high sustainability standards. As a symbol of this long-term partnership, we carry the iconic Rainforest Alliance frog seal on sleeves and packs of Nespresso coffee. The amount of Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee may vary between Nespresso products. Learn more about the seal and what’s behind it at Rainforest-Alliance.org/nespresso.

Our products will continue to bear the Rainforest Alliance seal after the guidelines for use of the seal change at the end of 2024. The Rainforest Alliance grants an exceptional allowance to its labelling guidelines on the basis of the AAA Program being assessed and aligned to the Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agriculture Standard.

The seal is used across our entire range of coffee. This is based on the volume of certified coffee we buy (from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms) combined with our commitment to support farmers in the transition to regenerative agriculture and to scale the amount of coffee we source from farms practicing regenerative methods. With the introduction of the upcoming EU legislations and Empowering Consumers Directive we are working with the Rainforest Alliance to ensure our labelling and claims comply with the new regulations.

The AAA Program has evolved in 20 years, but one thing has not changed: our commitment to partnering for positive impact on livelihoods and landscapes.

Today we’re working with the Rainforest Alliance on a transition from sustainable farming to regenerative agriculture. This approach harnesses the power of nature to heal and restore itself. Promoting the health of the soil, plants, and waterways creates thriving natural ecosystems and ideal conditions for productive coffee farms, and improving landscapes and livelihoods of the communities that depend on them.

Together, we’re bringing you some of the world’s finest coffees, made with care.
