The 2011 Nestlé Creating Shared Value report presents some of the achievements of the Nespresso sustainability commitments as part of its unique AAA Sustainable Quality™ coffee sourcing program.

At the end of 2011, Nespresso was sourcing over 60% of its coffee through its AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program, with purchased volumes higher than the previous year. The company is on track with its commitment to source 80% of its coffee from the AAA Program by the end of 2013.

A concrete approach to sustainable quality

Approaching its 10 years of existence, this unique coffee sourcing program focused on sustainable quality is going from strength to strength. “Our concrete approach to sustainable quality has led to stronger relationships between Nespresso and the farmers. As a result, we have seen an increased loyalty of AAA coffee producers towards our company,” says Guillaume Le Cunff, International Marketing and Strategy Director, in charge of sustainability, at Nestlé Nespresso SA.

Colombia is one of the most important coffee sourcing countries for Nespresso and the country with the highest number of individual AAA Program farmers. At the end of 2011, 37 000 farmers in Colombia had already joined the AAA Program. Nespresso has been working closely with the Federación Nacional de Cafeteros de Colombia and other partners to create innovative and efficient solutions to address, among others, water conservation issues.

The central mill in Jardín, Colombia, creates a centralised and more efficient milling process for the farmers, while helping protect the local ecosystems. The first of these has led to the installation of around 17 000 water treatment units since 2008. The second initiative has been the co-financing and implementation of a central mill in Jardín, Antioquia. The water infrastructure in this new mill is designed to reduce the water consumption by half and treat 100% of the waste water.

“The AAA Program has developed into a significant and innovative initiative in the speciality coffee sector, attracting major partners who recognise the AAA approach as an effective model for Creating Shared Value for all stakeholders,” adds Mr Le Cunff.
