Special Reserve Maragogype Grand Cru 2014, an exclusive coffee experience for connoisseurs

24.09.2014

A rare and remarkable Grand Cru, as only Nespresso can create

Maragogype

Following the success of Hawaii Kona Special Reserve 2012, Nespresso coffee experts embarked on a quest to present Club Members with yet another exclusive connoisseur tasting experience.

The result is Special Reserve Maragogype Grand Cru 2014, composed of the finest specimens of an extremely rare and immensely precious coffee variety with uncommonly large coffee beans from Central and South America.

“With Maragogype we have proudly outdone ourselves again,” said Karsten Ranitzsch, Head of Coffee Nestlé Nespresso SA. “Thanks to our longstanding relationships with coffee smallholders, we could source the best Maragogype beans from four distinct origins. We have carefully blended and roasted them to highlight the specificities of their terroir. Due to the scarcity of these precious beans we can only produce a very limited amount, but it is our a privilege to offer this unique sensory experience to connoisseur Club Members who enjoy trying new and rare varieties.”

Sourcing a limited and prestigious variety

A natural variety of Arabica Typica, Maragogype derives its name from a town in Brazil of the same name where the plant was first discovered in the late 19th century. The unusually large coffee plant, often twice the size of regular coffee plants, has the largest known coffee beans in the world. With a much smaller yield compared to other coffee varieties, Maragogype is less profitable for farmers to grow, thus adding to its scarcity. Nevertheless, this highly coveted and prestigious variety is prized by coffee connoisseurs for the delicacy and sophistication in taste that distinguish it from other coffee varieties growing on the same terrain.

Achieving exceptional sophistication through coffee expertise

Thanks to its deep expertise throughout the value chain, Nespresso can again present Club Members and coffee connoisseurs with a truly unique Special Reserve Grand Cru. Nespresso coffee experts brought together the best Maragogype beans from coffee smallholders in four different countries: Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua and Colombia. Carefully blended, each origin contributes the hallmark flavour of its terroir to the complexity of this aromatic Grand Cru coffee.

Due to the large bean size and low density, roasting Maragogype can be a challenge, but Nespresso coffee experts have drawn out their full essence through gentle split roasting. The beans from Mexico and Nicaragua were roasted longer to enhance their mild, round notes. The Colombian and Guatemalan beans were roasted for a shorter period for a fruity finishing touch. The result is an exceptionally smooth, delicate and balanced mild Grand Cru with a hint of acidity and sweet, malty and faintly green notes.

Maragogype Special Reserve 2014 comes packaged in a premium silver aluminium capsule with gold highlights and is available in single sleeves or as a gift set. The Special Reserve 2014 gift box includes one sleeve of Maragogype, two tasting glasses for Mild Espresso Grands Crus and a tasting guide inviting coffee connoisseurs to indulge all their senses in an exclusive coffee ritual.

The Special Reserve Maragogype Grand Cru will be available for a limited period from end of October, 2014.
